What I Like About Nectar

The overall value and quality of Nectar VS the price is very hard to beat. It uses high quality foams and has several cooling features and is priced very competitively.

There are in fact many foam mattress brands that are thinner, with less quality foams that are $200-400 more expensive.

The overall feel of the Nectar Mattress is a medium. This firmness will appeal to and work for most sleepers.

You Might Like Nectar if You:

  • Want a mattress will quality materials for a good price.
  • The Nectar is one the best made mattresses we have come across for the price.
  • Build quality, warranty, trial period and the overall feel are above average.
  • Area person who likes the Tempurpedic feel. Nectar rivals the feel of some
  • Tempurpedic mattresses but you won’t pay the hefty up-charge for the brand name.
  • Sleep hot. The Nectars gel infused memory foam helped to keep the mattress cooler than a traditional memory foam.
  • Are interested in buying online but worried you won’t like your choice. You get an entire year to try Nectar!
  • Will be using an adjustable base. If you own or plan to buy an adjustable base at some point the Layla performs well on the base. It bends easily and lays back to the flat position once you are finished inclining.
  • Value a forever warranty – Who wouldn’t!?

What I Like About the Loom & Leaf

The Loom & Leaf Mattress is a luxury memory foam mattress. This mattress is more substantial than many of the 10″ foam mattresses and the luxury feel is noticeable from the 1st time you lay down on it. This uses a quilt on top. I tend to like a quilt on top to give some separation from laying directly on memory foam. I think having some separation from the memory foam helps the mattress sleep cooler and gives you a bit more traditional feel on top VS just laying on a slab of memory foam. It provides a bit more plushness on top as well.

You Might Like the Loom and Leaf if You:

  • You want a good value – The Loom & Leaf stacks up to many of the big box store brands you will find in stores but will save you money.
  • Like to sleep cool – The design of the Loom & Leaf disperses heat efficiently. The quilting layers on top keep you from sleeping directly on the gel memory foam which can get warmer. In addition the poured gel layer helps with cooling where most of you body heat will reside on the mattress.
  • Value a choice of firmness – Loom & Leaf is not claiming that one mattress is “perfect for everyone” which makes total sense! Their double choice gives you options.
  • Are a heavier sleeper – When compared to a 10″ mattress the Loom & Leaf is a good option if you are a heavier sleeper. You will not have issues bottoming out on this mattress.
  • Like the combo of bounce and body conformance – foe being a memory foam mattress it performs well here. The quilt integrates well with the memory foam to give you a good combo of body conformance but without feeling “stuck”. It helps keep you up and supported a bit more.

What I Like About Novosbed

The design of Novosbed is amazing. In that many sleep trials let you try a mattress, but if you don’t like it you are forced to either settle for something you don’t love, or to return it. Novosbed aims to take care of that problem.

They have what they call Comfort+. It comes free as part of your sleep trial so if you need to, you can fine-tune the firmness. See our video below for a demo.

The Novosbed is a memory foam mattress that comes in a triple choice, firm, medium of soft. What’s most unique about it is their comfort guarantee.

Novosbed also uses very high quality memory foam.

You Might Like Novosbed if You:

  • Are worried to buy online – Novosbed’s comfort kits should take some of the worry away when buying online. If you don’t like the feel you do not need to settle or or just return it. You can change the feel to make it either firmer or softer.
  • You want a good value – Novosbed has a very similar feel to the Tempurpedic & Serta I-Comfort lines but comes in at a fraction of the price.
  • Like to sleep cool – Foam mattresses can sleep warm. However, the Novosbed cover and aerated memory foam helped to keep it at a neutral temperature.
  • Sleep in multiple positions – This mattress is a good medium feel with good body conformance. Sleeping on your side, back or stomach Novosbed will conform to your body very well. If you are a stomach only sleeper you may want to consider the firm. Side only maybe consider the soft. If you sleep in different positions all the time the medium should work great. But any of those can be altered with the comfort kit as well.
  • Are a heavier sleeper – When compared to a 10″ mattress the Novosbed is a good option if you are a heavier sleeper. I wouldn’t recommend an all foam mattress under 11″ for anyone over 250lbs. The foams are also a good higher density foam which means they will have good durability.

What I Like About the Signture The Alexander Signature Series is a gel memory foam mattress from Nest Bedding. Nest also offers several other collections as well however, this is their best seller. The Alexander Signature Series comes in three different firmness’s. Each one is suited towards specific sleeping preferences. Pick the one best suited for your sleeping. You Might Like the Signature if You:
  • You want a good value – The Nest Alexander Signature Series stacks up to many of the big box store brands you will find in stores but will save you money.
  • Like to sleep cool – Foam mattresses can sleep warm. However, the design of the Nest disperses heat efficiently. The quilting layers on top keep you from sleeping directly on the memory foam which can get warm. The airflow poly layer also helps to circulate air to aid in cooling as well.
  • Value a choice of firmness – Nest is not claiming that one mattress is “perfect for everyone” which makes total sense! Their triple choice gives you options.
  • Are a heavier sleeper – When compared to a 10″ mattress the Nest is a good option if you are a heavier sleeper. I wouldn’t recommend an all foam mattress under 11″ for anyone over 250lbs.
  • Like the combo of bounce and body conformance – for having 4″ of memory foam the Nest Alexander is still very east to move around on. This is because of the quilting layers on the top. It integrates well with the memory foam to give you a good combo of body conformance but without feeling “stuck”.
  • Want good edge support – So far the Nest Alexander has had the best edge support for an all foam mattress we have tested. Sitting and laying down the edge support does its job.

What I Like About the Layla

Layla is the first Copper Infused Memory foam mattress. In addition the Layla is unique in that it is dual sided. It has a soft side and a medium firm side as well. The consumer can unzip the cover and flip the core to try the other firmness out. It this versatility that makes Layla an interesting choice, especially when you are buying it online without feeling it first. Having a couple choices in one mattress might put you at ease with it being an online purchase.

You Might Like the Layla if You:

  • Are someone who values having more than one option. The Layla is unique in that you can change the mattress right at home from a soft feel to more of a medium firm feel. This is especially a great feature when you take into consideration you’re not testing the mattress before you buy it.
  • Area person who uses copper therapy for arthritis or other ailments. I cannot speak on behalf of the science with the copper infused foam but many people use copper items such as athletic wraps for pain and arthritis. You will want to look into this further if you are interested in the possible health benefits. It can’t hurt though!
  • Sleep hot. The Copper Infused Memory Foam is also supposed to be a cooler foam. I can speak from experience on this trait. Layla slept cool and I never experienced any excessive heat or sweating.
  • Are interested in buying online but worried you won’t like your choice. Layla may give you more piece of mind buying online being that you have two firmness levels to choose from in one mattress.
  • Will be using an adjustable base. If you own or plan to buy an adjustable base at some point the Layla performs well on the base. (See our video below) It bends easily and lays back to the flat position once you are finished inclining.

What I Like About the Oceano

My Thoughts (Ross)

The Oceano is so far one of the most awe inspiring mattress we have reviewed. Its sheer thickness and quality invokes luxury & for not much more than most of the competition.

The Oceano Mattress impressed me for the following reasons.

A.) To me the overall build and quality was above average. How much mattress is there is amazing and the fact that fits in a box is crazy! A lot goes in the Oceano. It uses several comfort layers and two coil units. The base coil unit is the very durable quantum edge to edge coil system. The top micro coil unit adds really good deep support, bounce and durability. That coil unit also allows air to flow much better than f it were a foam layer.

B.) The top comfort layers really didn’t get hot and it had a great feel that should work for the majority of people in terms of firmness level. The overall comfort and firmness level of the Oceano were great. It has a very luxury feel. You get a good amount of pressure relief and body conformance but not an overwhelming amount of body hug so its still very easy to move and adjust positions on.

C.) It worked well in all sleeping positions. For the most part the Oceano should work well for most people in most sleeping positions. For my weight at 200lbs it was great in all positions. A light side sleeper could potentially like something a bit softer but for most it should work well.

D.) It has been my favorite gel memory foam mattress thus far. This is going into the top picks list for sure. When it comes to online mattresses, Brentwood home has some of the best. They are mattress makers where some companies seem to be better at marketing than they are building mattresses.

E.) The handles make it easy to spin and move around. I recommend giving you mattress a spin every so often so you are not laying in the same spot all the time. This will help wear the mattress more evenly. Since it’s not 2-sided you can just spin it. But it does help.

F.) 25 year warranty & 120 Night trial give you some peace of mind. Brentwood Home backs up theor mattresses with an impressive 25 years. The industry standard is 10-15 and only longer on high end mattresses generally.

What I Like About the Dreamcloud

My Thoughts (Ross)

The DreamCloud is one of the most awe inspiring bed in a box options I have reviewed so far. At 15″ thick it’s surprising they find a way to roll pack it and sip it in a box and still use quality materials.

DreamClouds sheer thickness and quality invokes luxury & for not much more than and less than many of their competitors.

The DreamCloud Mattress impressed me for the following reasons.

A.) The overall build and quality was above average. How much mattress is there is amazing and the fact that fits in a box is crazy!

B.) The top comfort layers really didn’t get hot and it had a great feel that should work for the majority of people in terms of firmness level.

C.) It worked well in all sleeping positions.

D.) It has been one of my favorite hybrid mattresses thus far. This is going into the top picks list for sure.

E.) The handles make it easy to spin and move around. I recommend doing this very few months.

F.) Lifetime warranty & 365 Night trial give you some peace of mind and is pretty much unheard of in the industry. This is a massive perk.

Overall the DreamCloud is built extremely well for the price. It is a high end mattress with a fair price. Additionally, it should work well for the majority of sleepers put there in terms of comfort and firmness level.

I think this is also a great option for heavier sleepers too since its built very well and thick.

What I Like About Idle

You Will Like the Idle Hybrid if You:

  • Are seeking a hybrid with a choice of firmness level
  • Are looking for a 2-sided/flappable mattress which can help extend the life of the mattress.
  • Are seeking a mattress that does not trap much heat
  • Want a choice of mattress type and firmness level
  • Looking to get a mattress that can last longer since it can be spun and flipped
  • Value a Lifetime Warranty – I wouldn’t expect any mattress to last an entire lifetime but if they are warrantying it its better than a 10-15 year warranty for sure.

My Thoughts (Ross)

I had a good experience on the IDLE Hybrid. Being that I own a mattress store I am very familiar with 1 and 2 sided mattresses and we are a store that sells both where most large stores only sell 1 sided models.

In terms of feel, we tested the medium and it was a nice true medium. Maybe just a touch on the firmer side of medium which I personally like since it will allow some break in without getting too soft.

It had good motion isolation and did not sleep hot.

The quality is very high and being able to spin and flip your mattress will extend the life of it.

What I Like About the Signature

My Thoughts

We had a good experience on the Brooklyn Bedding Mattress. The most notable thing is the fact that its under $800 with coupon applied. Its a solid mattress for the price.

The Brooklyn impressed me for the following reasons.

A.) The ability to order 3 firmness’s mike it a great choice for anyone and all sleeping positions. With many brands touting “the perfect mattress for everyone” and only one feel its refreshing that Brooklyn offers firmness choices. Lighter sleepers may want a softer feel to start and heavier sleepers may want a firmer feel to start.

B.) The top comfort layer really didn’t get hot. We slept comfortable temp all night. The Titan Flex foam infused with gel definitely stays cooler than traditional memory foam. The new design compared to the old all foam also allow better airflow since it uses coils vs a solid foam core.

C.) It worked well in all sleeping positions. The medum was great for all positions. If you sleep on your stomach the firm might be best and if you’re on your side all of the time maybe the soft would be best.

What I Like About the Avocado

You Will Like This if You:

  • Are looking for an all natural/organic – the Avocado is a healthy, clean choice and one of the best built natural mattresses we have reviewed so far.
  • Like to sleep cool – Generally latex sleeps the coolest. Then you add in that it’s aerated and uses a coil system rather than a foam core it all helps with air circulation. You don’t have an over whelming amount of body either so so more of your body is exposed to the air which helps to stay cooler. I did not experiece excessive heat at all.
  • You want a good value – Sometimes the natural and organic mattresses get really pricey. This is an honest, good price for the quality of build and materials that are uses. The pillowotp is a little pricier but its still a good deal for being organic.
  • Sleep in multiple positions – This mattress is a good medium feel with good body conformance. Sleeping on your side, back or stomach Avocado will conform to your body very well. As with most latex mattresses I can see some people thinking its a little on the firmer side but that’s typical with latex foam.
  • Are a heavier sleeper – This mattress is one of my top picks for heavier sleepers. Its thick, and built like a tank. Additionally latex is one of the most resilient foams that will last for a long time with minimal sag.
  • Like the combo of bounce and body conformance – With the latex & coils it maintains good bounce which makes it easier to adjust positions and not feel stuck.

What I Like About the Cedar

You Will Like the Brentwood Home Cedar if You:

  • Like to sleep cool – The organic cotton quilt and natural latex layers do not hold heat. If you are a hot sleeper latex is a good choice. Its aerated for airflow and has less body hug, which ensures more of your body is exposed to the air. Kayla is typically always cold so heat was not an issue for her either.
  • Want a Natural Mattress that’s good for side sleeping – The Cedar is softer than other natural latex mattresses we have tested. It uses medium density foam and the 2nd layer is grooved which allows the foam to give a little easier making it better for side sleeping.
  • Want a good value – The natural mattress market is smaller and the Cedar is priced right where it should be. Its a fair price for the quality of build.
  • Are looking for a latex feel with good bounce – The Cedar uses latex and a pocketed coil unit which both help with bounce and less of a sinking/stuck feeling.
  • Are looking for a mattress to fit all sleeping positions – The Cedar is a good medium feel and it performed well for all of our sleeping position tests. Many of the latex/natural mattresses we have tested have been firmer. This has a little softer feel which makes it the best natural option for side sleepers in our opinion.

What I Like About the Nest

You Will Like the Nest Bedding Latex Hybrid if You:

  • You want a good value for a THICK well built mattress– The Nest Bedding Latex Hybrid stacks up to many of the big box store brands you will find in stores but will save you money.

  • Value a choice of firmness – Nest is not claiming that one mattress is “perfect for everyone” which makes total sense! Their double choice gives you options.
  • Are a heavier sleeper – When compared to a 10″ mattress the Nest Beds are a good option if you are a heavier sleeper. You will not have issues bottoming out on this mattress.
  • Like the combo of bounce and body conformance – having latex paired with coils makes it very east to move around on. The latex integrates well with the coils to give you a good combo of body conformance but without feeling “stuck”.
  • Want good edge support – The Nest Bedding Latex Hybrid uses an edge to edge coil system that provides excellent edge support. Sitting and laying down the edge support does its job.
  • I know a lot of people like the idea of latex but have just never tried it. Latex has several benefits, like sleeping cooler and lasting longer. The amazing thing on this mattress is the fact that you can change the latex firmness if needed and even to memory foam if you discover latex just wasn’t for you.

This is especially a great feature when you take into consideration you’re not testing the mattress before you buy it. In my experience testing the mattress most people will like the soft side better. However, you may think you like soft mattresses and then discover a firmer mattress might be better for you.

  • Sleep hot. The Copper Infused Memory Foam is also supposed to be a cooler foam. I can speak from experience on this trait. Layla slept cool and I never experienced any excessive heat or sweating. When getting up in the middle of the night and laying back down you will have some warmth but you would expect that since its not like it plugged in and air conditioned. But over all it dissipates heat quite well.
  • Are interested in buying online but worried you won’t like your choice. Layla may give you more piece of mind buying online being that you have two firmness levels to choose from in one mattress. Being able to flip the mattress (after removing and putting the cover back on) you have another option for firmness. This is great for those of you who may not know what you like or those of you maybe a little worried to buy online.
  • Will be using an adjustable base. If you own or plan to buy an adjustable base at some point the Layla performs well on the base. (See our video below) It bends easily and lays back to the flat position once you are finished inclining. You will not have issues with the mattress snapping back into place as you could potentially with the wrong type of innerspring.
  • Motion reduction is important to you – If you are used to a traditional innerspring and can feel your partner moving around, you will find this is a drastic improvement for motion disturbance. You will not feel movement nearly as much on the Layla Mattress compared to a traditional innerspring.

What I Like About the Helix

You Like the Helix Nightfall Mattress if You:

1. Are of a heavier weight and need a mattress built to match.
2. You have a history of ‘breaking’ other mattresses… you know what we mean…
3. You like a medium scale on the firmness level.
4. You want a hybrid mattress that retains the envelopment of memory foam but is not overwhelming.
5. Sleep hot. Every single Helix mattress comes with their patented temperature regulation techniques that work to keep you cool in the night.

  • Like to sleep cool – Foam mattresses can sleep warm. However, the design of the Luxi with latex on top and gel memory foam on bottom helps it disperse heat efficiently. The columns and aerated foams allow for great airflow.
  • You want a good value – Luxi is a good value when you look at all it offers. Other mattresses that can adjust (airbeds like Sleep Number) are typically much more money.

How Each Mattress Is Reviewed and What Is Rated

As a store owner I know how much “fun” mattress shopping can be. From driving all around town stopping in store after store to be harassed in some cases by sales people to pouring through page after page online. It’s hard to know what is good or what is bad quality. Some mattresses look nice but are not built well. Some are built well but priced way too high. When we created Real Mattress Reviews we want ted to be able to help you with this process of weeding out the bad and discovering the good brands. To do this we look at several factors during our review process before we give a mattress a rating.

We sleep on each mattress for at least a week. I use my expertise in the mattress industry to report on the quality of the materials, build, adjustable base performance and the company. We then, as a his and her team report on comfort, motion transfer, temperature, support, and many other parameters. We do this together to provide you with two different opinions, body weights, and sleeping positions. A true comprehensive mattress review.

  • Durability & Materials – This criteria is obvious. You want to find a mattress that uses good quality foams, coils and other components to ensure your mattress lasts. You want to get your money’s worth!
  • Comfort & Feel – This is another obvious criteria. Comfort and feel is to a point a personal criteria, but we judge on if a mattress will be liked universally by most people or if they offer several firmness options. We also give our personal opinion on how it performed for us as a 200lbs male and 120lb female.
  • Price – This is important for most people. There are some brands that simply are over priced for what you are getting. We want to make sure you are getting the best quality for the money.
  • Cooling – Many people tend to sleep hot. For those of you that do we want to make sure we report on how each mattress performs in this important area.
  • Motion Transfer – This is important for couples. You don’t want to feel your partner adjusting positions or feel them getting into or out of bed.
  • Edge Support – We report on this because you want to be able to use the entire sleeping surface for sleeping (especially on a full or queen with 2 people) without getting a “roll off the bed” feeling.
Off Gassing – We find some people are really worried about this. Every single mattress we have reviewed has a smell, even “natural” mattresses. I do not put a ton of emphasis on this since any smell generally dissipates in a day or two.
  • Warranty & Trial – We love a company that has a strong warranty and trial. This ensures if you have any issues with the mattress falling apart or sagging badly that you have them behind you to take care of the issue. Trials are big with the online market since you cannot try them 1st in most cases. Most of the online brands give you plenty of time to test their mattress out.
  • Overall Rating – Finally we take in account everything and provide a mattress rating and our personal opinion on how we liked it.

Top 5 Mattress Types to Avoid

Super Cheap Mattresses

As a store owner I run into this on a daily basis. Because there is demand for inexpensive mattresses for kids or spare rooms or just people with a tight budget I offer them. We are talking Queen Sets (with a foundation) for $195, $279, $339 and so on. A store like mine has actually decent mattresses for those prices compare to big stores but you really need to understand that you’re getting what you pay for.

Some of these mattresses are very comfortable on my show floor and i’ll feel that way for some time. HOWEVER, mattresses in the $200-400 range are not designed to last a long time.

The lack high density foams, the lack a high coil count or thicker gauge coils etc. They are not meant to have 2 adults sleeping on them nightly. They just won’t last long. You’re better off saving and buying something nicer if you’re an adult and its a nightly use mattress.

Thin Mattresses

Generally a thinner mattress is thin because it lacks substance. In most cases, a tin or promotional mattress is not going to be very durable. They will usually not get rated very well for comfort and pressure relief since you will sink in less and have less contouring.

The next big issue with thinner mattresses, in my opinion, is that they are not suitable for heavier sleepers 250+ lbs. On a thin mattress in many cases, the core is not very high density otherwise its hard to get the right feel and many people will think its too firm. The same goes for coil units. Therefore on a thinner mattress, heavier people can often bottom out the mattress and they just won’t last as long as they should.

The thickness of your mattress really is a matter of preference, although there are differences for people of different weights.

Heavier people prefer a thicker mattress, at about 11-15 inches. Mattresses of this thickness tend to be medium firm to firm. They are preferred for heavier people because body weight tends to force mattress to conform to the shape of the body. Heavy people also benefit from higher density foam or a higher coil count mattress. Choosing a thinner mattress for a heavy person may lead to the need to replace the mattress more frequently or bottoming out.

Lighter people will do well with a mattress that is eight to ten inches thick; with this thickness, you’ll find a medium to soft firmness. Smaller people can use a lower density foam or lower count coil mattress as well.

Low Density Memory Foams

Foam density can be important to your mattresses durability and performance.

As I just noted for foam cores you need a good foam for it to last. The industry standard for a foam core or transitional support layers is 1.8. I would try to buy a mattress with at least that. 2.0 or 2.2 is very good. I have seen a couple that uses a 1.5 density and this was as I noted about thin mattresses used to make the mattress not feel too firm. But what they are doing is sacrificing longevity for initial comfort.

When it comes to memory foam 3.5-4 lb and up is acceptable. 5lb is very good. Some people will actually like the feel of the lower density memory foam better since the reaction time is typically a little faster. 5lb is super durable but often times can feel a little stiff.

Lower density foams will likely develop body impressions and sag faster than higher density foams.

Over Priced Mattresses With Tons of Marketing

Since I have been in the industry with my store and now reviewing mattresses I have discovered many big names are better marketers than they are mattress designers. Be wary of brands that spend millions a year on marketing and advertising. Everyone needs to advertise but some brands spend millions a year or perhaps a month. A lot of this cost is passed on to the consumers.

So before you pull the trigger on your mattress it really pays to do some comparing on a site like this to make sure you are not paying $1000 for a mattress that you can get for $600 from another brand. Many have similar construction but have very different prices. ur top picks reflect mattresses that are worth the money.

Super Soft or Super Firm Mattresses

This is another common occurrence in my store. I’ll have a customer come in and say “show me your softest mattress”. I’ll bring them over to it (it’s very soft) and it happens all time where someone does not think its soft enough.

Here’s the problem with that. Typically to get super soft you use foams that are low density. And a lot of them. This becomes a problem quickly. You will develop body impressions much faster on a very soft mattress. People also do not keep in mind that the mattresses are already naturally going to get softer as they break in

If a super soft mattress is your thing you should buy a firmer mattress and add a mattress topper to it to make it softer. Then once that topper is worn out you can replace it instead of the entire mattress.

Now for a super firm mattress. I don’t see a problem too much with this if that is the firmness a customer wants. But if it is overly firm you generally will not get any contouring on your lower back when back sleeping. Side sleeping you will not have any give for your shoulder or hips and stomach seeping it could irritate your ribs. With that said some people just like a firm mattress. I actually like the same idea of using a topper on a firm mattress and letting the topper wear out rather than the mattress.

Mattress Myths

More Coils Always Means Better Quality:

If is widely believed that a higher coil count means you’re getting a better mattress. In my store I have heard this a thousand times when shoppers are trying to compare what I have to the store across the street. Many times it is true but for instance to of my most expensive mattresses on my show floor only have 420 coils, BUT they use 12 gauge steel. The average coil is 14.5 gauge. So the 12 gauge steel coils are much stronger and thicker than the 14.5. This is a hard concept to explain sometimes to a customer when I tell them it has half the amount of coils. I have a coil samples to show people and then they understand. Most stores will tell you 800 or more coils is good. This is a good standard to go by but not all mattresses with less coils are subpar in quality. Now there are also many mattresses using a regular coil unit on bottom and a micro coil unit on top. These micro coils are designed to allow airflow and remove a layer of foam, they can be beneficial. Now you will have stores saying our mattress has 3200 coils, if you hear something outrageous like that as a selling tactic, just know they it most likely is using a micro coil unit and is not necessarily a better mattress.

Individually Wrapped Pocketed Coils are Always Better:

Another common thing I hear is sales people always trying to sell people on the pocketed coils. It is true most of the expensive mattresses use this type of coil unit. BUT, there are many high end brands and mattresses that use a traditional interconnected coils unit as well. With pocketed coils, make sure it has 800 or more. In my experience in my store I had 1 couple mattresses that had 696 or 669 pocketed coils and a bunch came back with warranties. I feel if theres not enough pocketed coils they can fail more often than a traditional coil unit. The biggest perk of the pocketed coils is motion reduction for couples, which is great. These coil units are not inherently better however in terms of longevity. I find I have had less warranties with traditional coil units than pocked coil units. So just make sure you are not buying a cheap mattress that uses a pocketed coil unit.

The More You Spend the Better the Mattress:

This concept is generally true, however some stores and some brands always have higher prices. Some of the big name brands like Tempupedic, Sealy, Simmons, Serta and some online brands spend millions on advertising. Some of that cost is then paid for in the form of mattress mark-ups by the customers. These brands still have some quality mattresses for fair prices too but do your homework. Most mattress manufacturers buy their foams and coil units from a select few factories so often times you can get a mattress that’s made from a smaller factory like Englander, Symbol or Restonic for a better price without sacrificing quality. Many of these brands can be found in smaller stores like mine or smaller sleep shops tat focus just on mattresses rather than furniture. These smaller stores typically already also have better pricing than the large stores. I run my store as a low-overhead store so its not fancy but I have quality products for good prices.

When it comes to online, use our site. Look at what we recommend and do your homework. Not all brands are saving you money compared to a store but some are.

Hybrid/innerspring

The coil or innerspring mattress is the most common mattress choice for many beds. They range in price from $300 to $1500. Innerspring mattresses are good for side and back sleepers who are not experiencing any back pain or heavyweight sleepers. The springs, or coils, are made from steel and these mattresses tend to be the bounciest. Innerspring mattresses can come in a variety of styles of springs, each offering its own twist on comfort and support. Some brands of innerspring mattresses come with individually wrapped, or pocketed, coils to reduce mattress-wide bounce. Pocketed coils will make the sleeping movements of your partner less disturbing to your own sleep. Innerspring mattresses are also available as pillow tops, with either foam or fiberfill making up the top. Pillow top mattresses provide solid support with squishy comfortable softness. Some manufacturers are now calling any innerspring with a pocketed coil system a hybrid. A hybrid uses coils with foam layers to provide the support and softness desired by some sleepers.

Memory Foam

  • Memory foam mattresses are becoming more popular as their price has declined over the last decade. They are still more expensive than the coil mattress, ringing in at $650-$3000. Memory foams are good for those who sleep primarily on their back and for those with body pain. These mattresses can be purchased with for dual firmness for partners who want or need different levels. The benefits of these mattresses are that they conform to the sleeper’s body, providing that cushion or hugging feeling; they isolate movement, so one partner’s restlessness doesn’t bother the other, and they are far less likely to contain allergens.
  • Drawbacks to the memory foam are that they can be hard to move around on, with that body-hugging conformity; they are made from synthetic materials that require airing out before use and may have a lingering chemical or plastic smell, and they have a reputation for retaining heat. Some manufacturers are now adding a cool gel layer to the memory foam to counter the heat retention.
  • Some of my favorite aspects of memory foam is the pressure relief and motion transfer. Memory foam performs very good for relieving pressure. I have pressure mapped many mattresses and generally memory foam performs the best in this area. Additionally, it minimizes motion transfer really well. Gel, copper, graphite infused memory foams can sleep cooler than traditional memory foam. But ultimately I feel that most foams end up close to your body temperature regardless or how they are infused.

Latex

Latex foam mattresses are comparable in price with memory foam mattresses. They are more breathable than memory foam, so they are less likely to retain heat. They are heavy and hard to turn but are firmer than memory foam. They are extremely durable, although cheap brands will develop lumps. In addition, they are antimicrobial and less likely to contain allergens, which is great for allergy sufferers.

What I like about latex is that it is, in my opinion, the most durable foam. It does not develop body impressions or sag very easily. I personally think latex also sleeps the coolest. Not trapping heat much and most are aerated and allow good airflow. Latex has less body hug and more of sleeping on top of the mattress feel. It’s springier too so if you have trouble moving around latex helps with that. I don’t think it has as good of pressure relief as memory foam, however.

All Natural/organic Bed

  • Natural/Organic Recently, in response to complaints about chemicals in mattresses and in an effort to support the green environmental conservation movement, some manufacturers are offering natural or organic mattresses. These mattresses are among the highest priced non-custom mattresses with a price tag of up to twenty thousand. They offer an organic alternative to memory foam and latex foam. They have no chemical smells and are better for the environment. Not all natural mattresses are equally organic. Since the word natural isn’t regulated, anyone can use it. Some mattresses will be labeled organic, even if only some of the materials are certified organic. If you are seeking a truly organic mattress, look for certification from GOTS or GOLS. To meet the GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) at least 95% of the materials must be certified organic.GOTS also prohibits the use of harmful ingredients like dyes and some chemicals. GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) requires that any latex must come from a certified, organic source. Prices for certified mattresses start at about $2000.
  • What I like about organic mattresses is that most of them are very durable since they are latex. Some people buy natural to not have “off gassing” For me I am not worried about off gassing, Most people associate off gassing with a smell more than harmful gasses. None of the mattresses are harmful unless maybe you are very sensitive or have some other health issue. But even the “natural” mattresses have a smell. I have even found some latex mattresses have a stronger smell. Latex has a distinct smell. Any smell on any type of mattress will dissipate after a few days, plus you should be using a protector and sheets etc that helps mask it some. It helps to let any mattress air out for at least a few hours or a day if you can.

Air Mattresses

Air-filled or adjustable air mattresses run from $700 to $4000. These mattresses are great for both back and side sleepers. They are especially beneficial for people who suffer from back or neck pain and arthritis. The dually adjustable sides offer flexibility and control, but some owners complain that adjusting the bed at night disturbs their partners. Also, the foam supports the divide the adjustable sides can become uncomfortable over time.

Performance Poly/custom Blends

Performance poly foams are not memory foam and not latex. But still higher end and better performing that traditional poly foam transition layers. Some of these foams sleep very cool and what many brands pitch is the fact that they have a faster response time than memory foam, but better pressure relief than latex. I have felt some very nice and high performing custom poly blends.

I have reviewed several mattresses that use a “custom” foam. I tend to really like most of them. Many have sort of a memory foam crossed with a latex feel. So you can achieve pressure relief and bounce at the same time. I like having some body hug but also some bounce. Many of these foams provide that.
